A Roundtable Discussion Presented by the Department of Cinema Studies at New York University
The Department of Cinema Studies announces a roundtable conference on the history and cultural significance of the New York-based "sex-exploitation" film genre of the 1960s.
The conference will cover a wide range of issues related to this important pre-pornographic film form through conversations with numerous individuals who helped to shape the genre. It will take place on Saturday, April 26, 2003, in the Dean's Conference Room, 721 Broadway, 12th Floor, New York City. Invited guests include:
David F. Friedman, producer and former President of the Adult Motion Picture Association of America; Arthur Morowitz, founder Distribpix; Joseph Sarno, director/screenwriter of over 50 low-budget sexploitation features; Bondi Wilson Walters, producer, distributor and Times Square cinema owner; C. Davis Smith; Kemper Peacock; Audrey "Madame Olga" Campell; plus many others.
Key scholars from other institutions have also been invited to participate:
Eric Schaefer, professor at Emerson College and author of "Bold! Daring! Shocking! True!": A History of Exploitation Films, 1919-1959; Moya Luckett, professor at University of Pittsburgh and editor of Swinging Single: Representing Sexuality in the 1960s; and Grady Turner, curator of the Museum of Sex's exhibition "NYC Sex: How New York City Transformed Sex in America."
In addition to the conference on April 26, there will be screenings of six "sexploitation" films, taking place on April 18 and April 25.
All Cinema Studies students, faculty and staff are invited to participate.
