For well over a decade, NYU Cinema Studies students, and other students of film and media, have had the opportunity to present their research to their peers at the annual Student Conference. The conference is now, and has been for quite some time, completely student-run.
The main goal of the conference is to provide students, regardless of school, department or academic level, a chance to present and defend their own original research projects. This experience is invaluable for future pursuits in academic or industry careers, both as public speaking experience and as opportunities to receive and respond to constructive criticism.
Another historical goal is to display the quality of NYU Cinema Studies students' scholarly work to the community at large. This year, we have expanded this goal to include other departments and institutions. Most significantly, this year represents a break from the Cinema Studies department-centric focus, as the conference tradition has been taken over by the Cinema Appreciation and Scholarship Club (CASC). CASC is a campus-wide organization that encourages involvement from students at all NYU levels and from all disciplines. The department of Cinema Studies remains a co-sponsor for the conference. We hope this positive growth and branching out into other departments and institutions will continue over the years, allowing for even more collaboration and exchange of ideas.
